Why invest in refrigeration installations with natural fluids? - S. Mourao -

This is one of the most asked questions lately by owners and managers of facilities that use refrigeration. Among them we can mention Supermarkets, Distribution Centers, Refrigerated Warehouses, Industrial Installations, and even smaller businesses, such as Bakeries and Mini Markets.

There are many lines of reasoning, but it is a fact that we need to take actions that protect our planet, and some relevant points that must be considered are:

  •  New F-gas regulations, impose serious obstacles in the implementation of HFCs for these applications, leading to work on a solution that helps to fulfill the goal of the Montreal Protocol, which is to replace HCFCs, synthetic refrigerant gases harmful to the environment, until 2040 in Brazil.

  •  Systems with natural fluids that are being installed today, will not have to undergo retrofit in the coming years.

  •  The new projects with CO2 and Propane, have a small amount of these fluids, which considerably reduces the cost of maintenance.

  •  Better energy efficiency

Dorin has this type of vision and already works with options such as CO2 (R744) and Propane (R290), having developed the prototype for CO2 in the early 90s and the compressors developed and properly certified to work with Propane (ATEX Standard).

In Brazil, a company that has this kind of vision of the future and is a trendsetter, Eletrofrio, has also been working on solutions with natural fluids for a long time, and through a partnership with the Ministry of the Environment and with UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) installed the first Supermarket in South America with propane technology using Dorin Semi-hermetic compressors.

The final customer chosen for this solution was Rede Condor, which always includes innovative solutions for environmental preservation and sustainability in its projects. The store was opened on April 3, 2019, being the 50th store, as main details we can mention:

  •  Located in Curitiba / PR and has a sales area of 5 thousand m².
  • It is the first supermarket in South America to use Propane, a natural gas harmless to the ozone layer and with extremely low GWP (Global Warming Potential), in its refrigerated equipment.
  • The installed system has 6 compressors of 34kW - HEX-ATEX family, to meet with propane the need for the refrigeration system of the entire store.
  •  In the low temperature area, which take care of products that are frozen, there are cascade systems using CO2 and being condensed by the glycol system which is also cooled by propane compressors.
  •  “When we idealize a new store, we look to the market for sustainable solutions to generate the least possible impact on the environment. The new Condor will go down in history as the first supermarket chain in South America to use revolutionary technology in the eradication of synthetic gases that harm nature”, highlights the president of the Condor Super Center, Pedro Joanir Zonta.

The result of all this is a customer satisfied with the solution and already thinking about new installations with the same solution. Recalling that we have alternative refrigerants here (Propane + CO2) that are considered sustainable, more efficient, and economically competitive.
